Dan Cohen

Bio

Dan Cohen (PhD, University of Virginia) is Assistant Professor in the Department of Religious Studies at the University of Missouri-Columbia at the University of Missouri-Columbia. As a Fulbright-Hays scholar in India, Dr. Cohen conducted extensive ethnographic research in India on Hindu ancestor worship and funeral traditions, including related Hindu ghost exorcism rituals elaborated through complex religious narratives and practices. Dr. Cohen is involved in ongoing collaborative research exploring the interface between religion, spirituality, and neuroscience. Recent collaborative work includes comparative research with U.S. and South Asian colleagues on brain injury populations in the U.S. and India to assess neuropsychological function in relation to religiosity, spirituality, and empathy. This as well as other research projects are ongoing. Dr. Cohen teaches courses on Hinduism and Buddhism, religion, psychology and neuroscience, the globalization of yoga and meditation, and environmental ethics.
